First, I want to introduce our Kyiv-Zhitomir diocese /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/001.jpg _parent
It covers 4 provinces in the north of Ukraine, including the capital - Kyiv. Area - 43,000 square miles Number of believers - about 100,000 /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/002.jpg _parent
160 parishes, 160 diocesan and religious priests. 155 nuns. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/003.jpeg _parent
Ordinary and his auxiliary bishop. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/004.jpg _parent

We had many plans for the future, but…………. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/007.JPG _parent
One country has spent many years convincing its own citizens that another country threatens it and it is necessary to start the war first. Ukraine did not want (and still does not) war, but it had to take up arms to defend itself. It's not just about defending the land that has been officially recognized by the international community. It is about the freedom and dignity of the nation that have been violated. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/008.jpg _parent
The war is still going on and is taking human casualties every day. Aggression does not decrease at all: This is a photo from around Kiev in early March --- /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/009.jpeg _parent
And this - from today's shelling of the Dnieper /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/010.jpeg _parent
We understood and understand that the enemy will not let us go and we will be attacked until the end of the war and victory. We strongly believe in this victory and it is only a matter of time. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/011.JPG _parent
I am here to give thanks for the prayer support we are seeing. Also, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the financial help that freed us to serve those most in need. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/012.jpeg _parent
Some people from Ukraine had to escape death, also saving their own children. Their life in one day (or night) had to fit into two suitcases, which were also sometimes left on the platform of the station, because there was no room on the train. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/013.JPG _parent
Sometimes the platform also separated parents and children because someone had to stay behind to defend their own home. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/014.JPG _parent
In the first days of the full-staff war, it felt like we were practically alone against the evil that was trying to enslave or destroy us. It seemed that the whole world only noticed the outcome of this fight. Like at a football match or a boxing match. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/015.jpg _parent
Every citizen of Ukraine discovered his task in this difficult time. Similarly, the Catholic Church has opened its doors to those in need. First of all, these were the doors of our undergrounds, cellars and parish halls. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/016.JPG _parent
Everyone hid there from the shelling, prayed and sometimes even lived for a long time, even with whole families. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/017.jpeg _parent
The youngest person who stayed overnight in the basement of one parish was only two days old from birth. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/018.jpeg _parent
As long as world politicians were thinking about helping Ukraine, we experienced the true unity of the Church. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/019.jpg _parent
From everywhere came words of solidarity and prayers to God that bore fruit. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/020.jpeg _parent
From the first days of the war, we did not ask anyone for anything, because many brothers and sisters in faith wrote and called us asking what we needed. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/021.jpeg _parent
Among the former was the Diocese of Biloxi in the person of Bishop Kihneman. God allowed to meet personally with bp. Luis on a course for new bishops, now we have met for the second time. The bishop of the diocese then asked me about the situation, needs ...and then offered help. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/022.jpg _parent
The entire diocese responded to the pastor's call and we received serious support. Then I realized that the solidarity of bishops and faithful is not just words, but above all part of our common road to salvation. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/023.jpg _parent
First of all, to secure the continued activities of the Caritas of our diocese. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/024.jpg _parent
In addition to this activity, regular trips with humanitarian aid to places that were particularly affected by the war are added /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/025.jpg _parent
As a result of the shelling of infrastructure facilities, Ukraine suffers from a lack of electricity, heat, and not even water. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/026.jpeg _parent
The great task of our pastoral centers is to prepare the so-called Indomitable Zones, where you can warm up, charge your phone, connect to the Internet… /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/027.jpeg _parent
Power generators are an indispensable need for such zones. We also look for and purchase them for large families and people with special needs. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/028.jpeg _parent
The other big call is to procure fuel for the generators in the event of a shortage we experienced in the spring and early summer. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/029.jpeg _parent
      Supplies /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/030.jpeg _parent
      More supplies /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/031.jpg _parent
      Even more supplies /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/032.jpg _parent
Since October 2022, a full-time social kitchen for refugees and poor people has been operating in Zhytomyr. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/033.jpeg _parent
This project took a lot of effort and still needs it. But it lends hot lunches to over 700 people every day. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/034.jpeg _parent
But it lends hot lunches to over 700 people every day. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/036.jpeg _parent
The monthly budget of such a kitchen is more than $35,000. This does not include fuel for the generators, in the absence of electricity. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/037.jpeg _parent
We are renewing life in our seminary after being completely plundered by the Russians. At the same time, in the seminary area, we began to expand the houses to accommodate nearly 50 refugees. Due to lack of costs, the work was temporarily suspended. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/038.jpg _parent
We have been conducting additional formation for priests of the diocese in the field of extraordinary pastoral work for several months now. Post-traumatic syndrome, soldiers returning home from the front, stress caused by the loss of a loved one and the state of war tension itself - require a new qualified approach. These trainings for the coming years will be our constant expense, on a par with rebuilding the country. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/039.jpg _parent
      /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/040.jpeg _parent
These are just a brief summary of our cause at the present time. I thank Almighty God for helping us to notice and respond to these calls. /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/041.jpeg _parent
During this war, we all took up the cross of serving the nation. Because we have learned that "A slave's collar is always lighter than a knight's armor." /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/042.jpeg _parent
We did not plan a war and we had to put on other people's shoes and make an inhumane effort. But the enemy did not realize that big shoes grow up. During the war even faster than ever. And I thank you again for all your support for Ukraine! /photoalbums/bishop-vitaliy-visit/043.PNG _parent

"I met Bishop Vitaliy Kryvytsky at the Masters of Spirituality conference for new bishops hosted by Pope Francis in September 2017 in Rome. There were 120 bishops from around the world participating in the conference. Quickly we all got a view of the universality of the Church and the fact that we are united in one faith no matter what language we spoke.

We translated for one another whenever it was needed to enhance our fellowship together. Additionally, all of the presentations were translated into different languages.

When I first met Bishop Vitaliy, I was struck by how young he was (45) and his vibrant smile. The Holy Father had truly chosen a young priest to lead the Church in Western Kyiv, Ukraine, with an eye to the future.  Who would have thought that five years later war would come to Ukraine?

I had a chance to meet by video conference with Bishop Vitaliy on March 1, 2022 about how he and his people are doing as the war rages. Once again, I was struck by his smile and deep faith.

He shared that it is a very difficult situation for everyone. The bombing has been relentless and many people have taken shelter in the churches and the church basements and rectories and convents and retreat centers. They are running out of food and necessities. They are hoping a truck will arrive from Caritas (Catholic Charities) Poland with food and supplies.

    • Bishop Vitaliy shared that he is on the Russian list of Ukrainian people who are to be executed.

    • "Bishop Vitaliy shared that he is on the Russian list of Ukrainian people who are to be executed. Bishop Vitaliy thought about moving to another city in Ukraine, but he and his 160 priests decided to stay in Western Kyiv with their flock, of approximately 200,000 Catholics. Bishop Vitaliy and his priests all went to confession and took up their posts at all 160 parishes in the diocese. I was deeply moved by such a powerful statement of faith and trust in Christ.

Bishop Vitaliy and I shared our faith together as bishops and as believers that the Crucified and Risen Jesus Christ has already won the victory no matter what happens. Once again, his smile told the story of his deep faith in Christ.

    • I asked him what he needed most and he said prayer.

    • "I asked him what he needed most and he said prayer. He asked that we all pray for the conversion of Russia and a Just Peace for the people of Ukraine through the Immaculate Heart of Mary as the Immaculate Conception as she proclaimed at Lourdes on March 25, 1858.

I promised him that I and we would pray for that very intention as a diocese and that I would offer Mass for him  and his people that very day. He thanked me and smiled.  We then prayed together for all the people of the Ukraine and his diocese and for the conversion of Russia and for all who are wounded or sick and for all who had died that they may rest in the Peace of Christ.  We prayed the Hail Mary together in our native tongues asking for the intercession of Mary, the Immaculate Conception.

Before we closed the conversation, I asked Bishop Vitaliy what we could do materially for him and his people.  He said, “Pray, pray, pray.” I told him we would pray but that we would also provide as much financial support as we could being that we are a Mission Diocese. I asked him to keep us informed about what is happening on the ground there and how else we can help him and his people.  With a mutual smile and best wishes, we signed off."

    • If you would like to help Bishop Vitaliy and his people in Western Kyiv, you can donate through our diocesan website below. We will take up a free will collection on the weekend of March 19-20, 2022 at our parishes.
